Russia Attacks Ukraine Kill Eight as US Steps Up Talks

Russian attacks across Ukraine have killed at least eight people as the United States increases diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and push the two sides toward de-escalation.

The latest Russian strikes targeted several areas of Ukraine on Thursday, causing deaths, injuries and damage to civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said six people were killed and eight others wounded when a Russian attack hit a farm in the northern Kharkiv region.

Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported the casualties and said emergency teams were responding to the aftermath of the attack. The strike added to a growing wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine as diplomatic efforts continue internationally.

Two additional people were killed in Russian attacks on Kyiv, according to local officials. One of the victims was reportedly killed in a car park near a maternity hospital, which was also damaged during the assault.

Russian Missile and Drone Attacks Hit Ukraine

Ukraine’s air force said the latest Russian attack involved an unspecified number of hypersonic and ballistic missiles, along with 282 drones and other weapons.

The scale of the assault highlights the continued intensity of the Russia-Ukraine war despite renewed international diplomatic efforts. Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly warned residents about missile and drone attacks as Russian forces continue striking targets across the country.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence said its military operations were aimed at Ukrainian defence facilities, logistics centres, telecommunications hubs and vessels being used by the Ukrainian military.

The ministry also said Russian forces had struck a tanker in the Black Sea that was transporting fuel and lubricants toward Ukraine’s port of Chornomorsk.

Poland Deploys Aircraft Amid Ukraine Attacks

The latest attacks also prompted a response from neighbouring countries. Poland’s military said it deployed aircraft to protect its airspace as Russian strikes continued across Ukraine.

Two Czech fighter aircraft were also deployed to support the operation.

Polish authorities described the measures as preventive and said they were intended to protect the country’s airspace, particularly areas close to regions threatened by the ongoing Russian attacks.

The situation has increased security concerns across NATO’s eastern flank, where governments continue to monitor Russian military activity and the possibility of spillover from the war in Ukraine.

Investigation Into Starlink Facility Fire

Poland also reported a separate incident involving a fire at a Starlink ground station in the central part of the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski described the incident as deliberate sabotage and said it could have been intended to disrupt internet access used by institutions, including Ukraine’s military.

Polish authorities have not established responsibility for the incident. Gawkowski said the circumstances were consistent with what he described as Russia’s changing approach to hybrid warfare. Moscow has denied accusations that it conducts such attacks.

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said NATO has contingency plans for what he described as Russian provocations, reflecting wider concerns about potential security threats linked to the war.

US Increases Diplomatic Efforts

The latest Russian attacks came as the United States stepped up diplomatic engagement with both Russia and Ukraine.

US officials held separate meetings with Russian and Ukrainian representatives on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday. The discussions focused on the war and possible ways to reduce its wider consequences.

No major agreement was announced following the meetings. However, the United States invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the next Group of 20 summit in Miami, Florida.

The renewed diplomacy comes as the Russia-Ukraine war continues to affect global energy, food and commodity markets.

Black Sea Security Raises Global Food Concerns

The Black Sea remains a major concern because Ukraine is one of the world’s important grain exporters. Much of its agricultural produce is transported through Black Sea ports.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development said economic growth in developing countries was slowing, with rising energy and wheat prices among the factors affecting economies.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, beginning in the Black Sea, to protect commercial shipping and global food supplies.

He said Ukraine had achieved a strong grain harvest but that Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports were making it difficult to deliver agricultural products to international markets.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also raised concerns about attacks involving commercial vessels in the Black Sea. His office said Erdogan told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that such attacks were difficult to justify and that greater attention was needed to protect navigation and commercial shipping.

Erdogan also reiterated Türkiye’s willingness to support efforts aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war. He said his country would continue working to encourage direct negotiations and pursue a lasting peace.

With Russian attacks continuing and diplomatic contacts increasing, the war remains a major security and economic issue for Ukraine, Russia, Europe and the wider international community.
